How to restore dried art oil paint

How to restore dried art oil paint
I want to show how I reanimated the old oil paint for later use. I was interested to restore paint, because now it is a rarity. Paint age about 50 years. I do not want to leave paint as a museum piece and I plan to use it for its intended purpose.

Old art oil paint
Breaking the tubes of paint, I was surprised - the paint was still a bit soft, like cool clay.

Chopped old art oil paint
I chopped the paint into pieces and left it until drying. The paint has dried for several months. During this time, I sometimes broke it into smaller pieces.

Ground dry art oil paint
When the paint is dry, I crushed it as much as possible and then ground it with mortar pestle. It was not easy to do.

Ground paint, linseed oil, mortar pestle
I mixed the dry pigment of the paint with linseed oil and ground it with mortar pestle.

Restored paint
The paint came to life.

Palette knives

Palette knives

In childhood I did not have a palette knife. I tried to make it myself. My homemade palette knife looked like a real one, but it was useless because was made of a thick and tough metal plate. My first painting in the technique of a palette knife was painted with old blunt blade of a knife. Now I look at this painting and I think that then it turned out well.

Most often I use 3 palette knives, which are on the right in the photo. The biggest palette knife (third from left) I bought to clean the palette. Sometimes I use this spatula in work.

Sometimes they write to me that the palette knife technique is a very complex technique. Maybe yes. Everyone has his own vocation in life. I can’t say that I suffered with a palette knife in my hand. This is supreme pleasure for me - finish work and drink 30 grams of cognac (if cognac is available) to relax. Personally, it’s much harder for me to sell than to paint. Probably because I'm an artist, not a sales manager.
